Your journey begins as you land in Marrakech, the vibrant “Red City” at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains. You’ll be met and transferred to your riad in the medina, where the thick walls and quiet courtyard offer an immediate contrast to the city’s energy just outside the door. Depending on your arrival time, take your first stroll toward Jemaa el-Fnaa square as the evening market stalls light up, filling the air with the smell of grilled food, spices, and the sound of drummers and storytellers. The rest of the evening is free to rest and settle in after your flight, with dinner either at your riad or a nearby restaurant recommended by your guide.

A full day is dedicated to exploring Marrakech itself. You’ll visit the Bahia Palace with its intricately carved cedar ceilings and tranquil gardens, the Saadian Tombs, and the striking Koutoubia Mosque, whose minaret has defined the city’s skyline for centuries. The tour continues into the Majorelle Garden (or an equivalent botanical highlight), a cobalt-blue oasis of cacti and palms once owned by Yves Saint Laurent. In the afternoon, wander through the souks of the medina — a maze of stalls selling leather, lanterns, spices, and textiles — before returning to Jemaa el-Fnaa for a second look at the square, this time better able to appreciate its rhythm. You’ll spend a second night in Marrakech, giving you a full, unhurried day in the city before heading toward the mountains.

Leaving Marrakech, the route climbs into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, one of the highest and most scenic roads in Morocco, with sweeping views over terraced valleys and Berber villages clinging to the hillsides. The first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO-listed fortified village (ksar) of earthen kasbahs that has served as a backdrop for numerous films. After exploring its narrow lanes and towers, continue past Ouarzazate — Morocco’s “Hollywood of Africa” — and on toward the Dades Valley, often called the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs for the ancient fortified structures dotting its cliffs. You’ll overnight in a kasbah-style hotel with dramatic views over the rock formations and river below.

This morning you head into the Todra Gorges, where sheer rock walls rise up to 300 meters above a narrow river-carved canyon — a favorite spot for rock climbers and photographers alike. After exploring the gorge on foot, the route continues east through the palm-lined Ziz Valley and the town of Erfoud, gateway to the desert and known for its fossil workshops. As the afternoon light softens, you’ll arrive at the edge of the Sahara near Merzouga, where 4×4 vehicles or camels carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes. Watch the sunset paint the sand in shades of orange and pink before settling into your desert camp for a traditional Berber dinner under a sky thick with stars.

A day dedicated entirely to the Sahara. Rise early for sunrise over the dunes — one of the most photographed moments in Morocco — before returning to camp for breakfast. The day can be shaped around your interests: sandboarding down the dunes, a visit to a nomadic Berber family for tea, exploring nearby oases and villages, or simply relaxing in camp and taking in the vastness and silence of the desert. As night falls again, enjoy a second evening around the campfire, with traditional music from your Berber hosts and another sky full of stars — a fitting close to your time in the dunes.

Watch one more desert sunrise before beginning the long, scenically rich drive north. The landscape changes dramatically as you leave the dunes behind and climb into the Middle Atlas, passing through Azrou, known for its cedar forests and resident Barbary macaques, and Ifrane, a town so alpine in style — with its steep roofs and stone chalets — that it’s often nicknamed “Morocco’s Switzerland.” The contrast with the desert you left that morning is striking. By evening you’ll arrive in Fes, Morocco’s oldest imperial city, where you’ll settle into a traditional riad ahead of tomorrow’s exploration.

Spend the morning exploring Fes el Bali, the largest car-free urban area in the world and a living medieval medina still humming with traditional craft. Highlights include the tanneries, where leather has been dyed by hand for centuries, the ornate gateways of the Royal Palace, and the University of Al Quaraouiyine, recognized as one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world. After lunch, the journey continues north to Chefchaouen, the famous “Blue City” tucked into the Rif Mountains. Arriving as the light softens, you’ll have your first walk through its blue-washed lanes and squares — an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Morocco.

Your final morning is spent wandering Chefchaouen’s photogenic streets at leisure, with time for a last coffee in a rooftop café overlooking the blue medina and the mountains beyond. When you’re ready, transfer to Tangier, Morocco’s gateway to Europe on the Strait of Gibraltar, for your onward flight or ferry connection — bringing an end to a journey that has taken you from the red city of Marrakech, across mountains and desert, to Morocco’s northern coast.
